Emil Frey Racing enters crucial stage of ADAC GT Masters season at the Sachsenring

  • Costa Balboa and Aitken remain in the hunt for the driver’s title
  • EFR sits atop of the team’s standings as season heads into the closing rounds
  • Another new venue for the team this weekend

Safenwil (Switzerland), September 20th 2022

Emil Frey Racing heads to the Sachsenring this weekend for the penultimate round of the ADAC GT Masters championship, with a strong result across the pair of one-hour races pivotal to both the drivers’ and team’s title aspirations.

Following a successful previous outing at the Lausitzring, the #63 Lamborghini Huracán crew of Albert Costa Balboa and Jack Aitken remain in touch at the top of the drivers’ standings in third, just 25 points adrift of the leaders.

Meanwhile, courtesy of the #63’s pair of second place finishes, Emil Frey Racing holds a 21-point cushion in the teams’ standings ahead of the final four races of the season. Elsewhere, in the Junior Trophy championship, Konsta Lappalainen and Mick Wishofer will be aiming to solidify their second place in the standings this weekend.

The Sachsenring is a demanding 3.671km circuit, best known as a motorcycle venue but which has hosted car racing since the mid 1990s. Passing opportunities are rare but not impossible, meaning that qualifying on Saturday and Sunday morning will take extra importance ahead of the races. Much like the Lausitzring, this will be Emil Frey Racing’s first appearance at the Sachsenring.

The first half of the circuit is tight and twisty, demanding a lot of mechanical grip and acceleration, particularly around the long sequence of seven left-handers between turns four and 10, the front right tyre will see a lot of energy in a short time. The final section of track is comprised of high- to medium speed corners, with turn 11 sending the cars on a sharp downhill charge to yet another pair of left-handers to finish the lap.

Tyre management will also be a key element to securing a good result, with the team having experienced two failures in the recent GT World Challenge Europe race on the #63, costing it a near-certain podium.

Costa Balboa and Aitken will also be carrying 10kg of success weight for the first of the weekend’s races, although this weight is removed for practice and qualifying. There is no success weight for the #19 Huracán of Arthur Rougier and Franck Perera, who will be keen to get back on the podium this weekend after an up-and-down round at Lausitzring. The team will get its first taste of the Sachsenring circuit on Friday morning in the first of two one-hour practice sessions, beginning at 08:40. Second practice takes place later on at 13:15. Qualifying on Saturday starts at 08:50, while race one begins at 13:00. Sunday’s action follows the same format, with the 20-minute qualifying session at 08:50 and race two at 13:00.
